Tips For Business Success

“SUCCESS IS NOT FINAL; FAILURE IS NOT FATAL: IT IS THE COURAGE TO CONTINUE THAT COUNTS.”

-Winston S. Churchill

1. Company Culture

“Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” – Peter Drucker.

It takes a long time to build a good culture. The good news is that you can make a difference to the culture of your company, your department, and or you team. You can help shape culture.  How? By creating the environment that other people want to be involved in. Don’t expect immediate results. It truly takes time, effort and intentionality. And, when you feel you have the culture where you want it, be aware of culture drift. You don’t do culture one day and you are done. Work on your culture all the time.

2. Right People

Jim Collins is credited with coining the theme “right people in the right seats”. Assuming you have the “right bus” (you already have the right business with culture and strategy intact) the next most important thing about business is getting the right people and they are sitting in the right seats on “your bus”. Unless your business is a one man show (you), you need good people to help you run your business or your team. If you don’t have good people, you are fighting an uphill battle, you are micromanaging every aspect of the business or you are fixing all the mistakes. Why do that? Stop! Get the right people. I have embraced the philosophy of hire slow (it gives you the opportunity to find the right person) and fire fast (get rid of the non-performers). But don’t be paralyzed in your hiring, either. Do it! Good people will make all the difference in the world to you and your business! Good luck! You will not regret getting the right people on the bus.
